PCD Care Learning Guide

Educational use only

This site is for educational purposes only. It does not diagnose, treat, or replace care from a licensed medical professional. Always follow guidance from your medical team.

Airway clearance

  • Many care plans include a daily airway clearance routine designed by a clinician or respiratory therapist.
  • Families can ask how often to do the routine when well and what changes during illness.
  • Technique, timing, and equipment should be individualized by the care team.

Medications and cultures

  • Some people use saline, antibiotics, inhalers, or other therapies when prescribed.
  • Respiratory cultures may help the team choose treatments when infections occur.
  • Medication questions should include dose, purpose, side effects, and when to call.

ENT and hearing

  • PCD can affect mucus and fluid movement in the nose, sinuses, and ears.
  • Families may need ENT and audiology follow-up for sinus symptoms, ear fluid, or hearing concerns.
  • Ask how hearing will be monitored over time.

Sick-day planning

  • Ask the team for a written plan that explains symptoms to watch for and who to call.
  • Clarify when fever, breathing changes, color change, dehydration, or unusual sleepiness needs urgent care.
  • Keep emergency contacts and medication lists current.
